    another graphics driver thread

    Hey there!

I'm using a dell vostro a680 and I think the right driver for the graphics card isn't installed.

Compiz is working okey, although it uses up a lot of cpu time, compared to my dell inspiron 1501 with less memory and smaller cpu. I compare everything to that...

    here is my lspci:

I recommend posting this in the Multimedia & Video section; there'll be many more people there equipped to give you a knowledge response.

    another graphics driver thread

    I posted another thread, here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7018484

for someone to help me install the proper graphics driver.

In the other thread, you can find the output of the following commands:
    lspci
    glxinfo
glxgears and the specs of the laptop.

    I'm using ubuntu 8.10.

This is not that important, although it is frustrating sometimes, so, if someone has the time and the knowledge to help me, I will definitely appreciate it!! If you need some additional information, just ask!

    thank you!

    BUMP

This is starting to annoy me, scrolling on a simple webpage or blog isn't simple at all... it scrolls down and when I stop scrolling with the mouse, the page goes down even more, using up the cpu like hell, and on pages that don't have flash or java in it, just simple text or some pictures. The same happens in open office documents, or pdfs. It is annoying just because the laptop has 3G memory and a 2.0 ghz dual core processor, and it is sluggish whenever something is scrolled...

    Please, anyone??

    Re: another graphics driver thread

Switch acceleration method to XAA by adding the line below to the "Device" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
    Code:
            Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
Remember to restart your X.org by logging out and logging in again.

    Re: another graphics driver thread

    Threads merged.
Edit, I have seen many threads with the intel graphics with Intrepid. Some users are unable to use compiz at all. You may look at the amount of memory shared with the graphics in bios to see if it can be increase.

    Re: another graphics driver thread

Hey, thanx for the replies and sorry for the double post.

This is how my xorg.conf file looks, after the change:
    HTML Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
    # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
    # here are ignored.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    	Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    EndSection
    Unfortunately, glxgears is not improved:

    glxgears
    1963 frames in 5.0 seconds = 392.350 FPS
    1728 frames in 5.0 seconds = 344.209 FPS
    1859 frames in 5.0 seconds = 371.751 FPS

    Any other ideas?
You could point me to some other threads about others having the same problem.

Rebooting right now to see if the memory amount allocated to the graphics card can be increased.

    Thanx
