    Boot problems

I dual boot Ubuntu Intrepid and Xp when i tried plugging in an extra monitor it asked me to log out and log back in. on reboot i got no graphics on either monitor then after running recovery mode got no boot at all!

during the boot i get the message

    "*starting kernel log daemon...
    chown:invalid group: 'klog:klog'
    chown:invalid group: 'klog:klog'
buffer I/0 error on device loop0, logical block 0
...lists lots and lots off buffer errors"

    xp still boots as normal...

have tried running all the options in recovery mode, memtest etc. wondering what else to do I never even get to the login screen!!

thanks for any help you can give.
