How well will Ubuntu run on a 1GHz Computer? It currently has 384MB RAM but I can upgrade it.

I run Ubuntu 9.04 on a 1.60Ghz netbook. Just remove programs you do not need and remove items from boot, and you should be good. How much RAM does it have?

The speed of the processor is most likely not the limiting factor; 384 MB is the minimum required amount of memory needed to install the regular version of Ubuntu.

It will probably run OK, but if you can put more memory in it, it will probably run a little better.

You could also try Xubuntu, which is an official Ubuntu variant especially for older computers with less memory and slower processors. I have installed Xubuntu 8.10 on an old 1 GHz Pentium III laptop with 256 MB memory, and it runs quite well on it.

How well would a 1GHz with 512MB RAM do? I'm looking at this computer for a friend.

when i first started using ubuntu i was using a desktop PC with 600mghz pentium 3, and 256 MB of ram (on-board video), this is for gnome 8.04 ubuntu, it didnt ran extremely fast but it worked well enough.

for a slower computer i would recommend using xubuntu though, it will run much faster due to a less advanced desktop, as far as use and looks its similar enough to gnome where i never found it to be an issue, it just limits what you can do for effects which you dont want on a slower system anyway.

I should run fine, I googled that model a little, and it appears to be an intel chipset, so it should "just work"

It won't likely be much for gaming, but should do fine with streaming video and audio.

My friend wants to use it as a desktop system. Would it work alright?

Should be reasonable enough. My daughter is running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Dimension 4100 with 1Ghz P-III processor and 512 MB RAM. She's not a gamer or video editor but she does the standard web surfing, watching YouTube, e-mail, word processing, instant messaging, Skype, etc..... So unless your friend does very processor intensive things it should be fine.

I run Ubuntu 8.04.2 on a Pentium III 800 MHz with 384M of RAM. It works fine.
