Re: PS2 linux kits on ebay

I've got one. It's pretty nice if you enjoy using CLI. The kit is targeted to people who wan't try programming for PS2, but I've myself used it mostly as a portable music/video player, and It also runs some game emulators. I'd say that old NES and Atari 2600 games are much nicer to play with a TV and two pad controllers with..

It's not very powerful, as most of PS2's power is in it's vector co-processors that are not much use for normal computing. And with 32 MB of RAM you don't want to run Gnome, but WindowMaker is ok. You can't run any x86 software, and sometimes even compiling from the source is not enough, as the hardware is very different from PC's. But it's cheap, small, portable, works with any TV and most of monitors around, has a built-in digital sound output and almost every HDD works with it. So it's a nice project and with a little imagination you can get lots out of it.

If you want to know more, here's the PS2-Linux community: http://playstation2-linux.com/

Oh, yes. I think I should mention that you need a US kit for US PS2, European kit for Euro PS2 and so on. US/Euro PS2's don't even have the connector for japanese kit's external HDD..

edit: There's also BlackRhino project that does a debian-based linux for PS2..
