    biggest advantage of repo software imho is that it gets updated automatically.

    yes that's a good point, but... as with the apps listed above, many of the repo versions are not current releases so a manual install may bring you a lot more up-to-date

    I once tried to compile a new version of a program, and this program required a new version of "libfreetype". So I compiled that as well, but I must've used the wrong options because the new library stopped all graphical programs from opening. I finally managed to use apt-get to restore the old library.

    So, breaking your system is a possibility.
    I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
