Need major help in the beginning

I installed Ubuntu (the latest one just downloaded 2 days ago) on my new computer, raw (after formating the disk with an XP disk). It threw up hundreds of illogical block messages but it got through that.

Everything looks healthy except now I should be installing drivers. But all those driver disks that came don't do a lot of good because they're written for windows. And without the network adaptar driver that computer cannot get online. And I have to redo all my cables to my old computer to even come and ask a question.

Naturally, I'd think there's a beginner's guide to this for Windows users. But for some reason I don't even know where to look.

So I'm at this very difficult stage that is the beginning. If anyone helps me get as far as getting it online and downloading drivers I'm sure I can handle it from there.

    Please help.

I've never come across a wired adapter that wasn't automatically detected. What kind is it?

It's built-in adaptor of the motherboard.

The eBay listing says the motherboard is
    Biostar nForce 520

    The motherboard box says
    nVidia nForce 520 NF520-A2 TE
(so nVidia is expanding to the motherboard business? I dunno)
It's also got small print there that says 58-RN520EA2-S01.

    Thanks for replies.
