Ubuntu hangs on boot - power cord issue?

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on a Compaq Presario F700 laptop, dual boot with Windows Vista. When I try to boot into Ubuntu, the progress bar always stops at the same place right after it starts trying to load. If I hold down any key it will proceed to load, but I have to hold down the key the whole time until it loads. But I've just recently noticed as strange as this may sound, that if I unplug my laptop and then replug it in after it hangs, then it will load normally, without the need for holding down a key. Does anyone have any suggestions what this could be caused from?
