We use phpBB at work currently and it seems to do the trick quite nicely and it appears to be fairly popular.

MyBB and SMF are both excellent solutions; I prefer MyBB. A new board software that will be good is Uniboard- http://www.unisolutions.pl/ but that's not fully in English yet. phpBB is nice, but very basic to start with; MyBB would be the easiest and closest to vB.

+1 for MyBB. A great solution for forum/BB needs if phpBB doesn't suit the environment.
