    UK Parliament

    Hi,

I tried to watch proceedings in the UK Parliament today. I got the sound but not the video.

I'm running 8.04 and I can get YouTube and other video content.

Any ideas about what may be missing here?

    Thanks in advance

What browser are you using, and are you using 64 bit?

    Thanks for the reply.

Is it a live stream? If so, it is more than likely to be because of that, and not your flash if it works fine with youtube etc...

It seems to me they invented something like that years and years ago... What was that called? ... oh, the radio

Yes, it's a live stream and the site says specifically that it supports Firefox.

Dr. Small: in case you didn't get it: the site offers video as well as sound. It's NOT a radio stream.

It's not flash, though it is something just as nasty! The video codec is MS Win Media 9 and the audio is WMA8. It does work for me, though only after I enable javascript.

Why on earth they think it is a good idea to embed their content into a web page with this mish-mash of javascript instead of just providing a link so we can choose to use the media player of our choice, I cannot understand. Perhaps I'll while away a few minutes by writing to them, as they do welcome feedback according to the page!

    Re: UK Parliament

Horace: I copied your comment to the folks at Parliament TV and got this reply:

"Unfortunately due to licence restrictions we are unable to*provide direct links to footage"

This rather opaque utterance appears to end the matter from their point of view. So: you said you enabled Java and got the video. I have Sun Java 6 web start on my machine and thought in my ignorance
that it would work automatically. Is there some other Java application that I should get and use?

    Cheers

Open Firefox and on the top menu bar click on Edit -> Preferences -> Content and put a tick in the box opposite, Enable JavaScript. Hope this helps

    Be aware:
    Java != Javascript

    Java is a programming language

JavaScript is a scripting language, primarily used in the form of client-side JavaScript for the development of dynamic websites.
