I'm in the need of switching keyboard layouts constantly. Is there a way to bind this to a hot key? Or anything faster than clicking with the mouse on the keyboard indicator on the gnome panel?

Open the preferences of the keyboard indicator applet and navigate to the Layouts tab. Below the list of layouts there's a button called "Layout Options...". Click it and open the "Layout switching" entry in the new window that pops up. Sadly there are only predefined keyboard shortcuts to choose from. You can't define your own shortcut there.
Hope that helps.
No, that is what I'm already doing.
