Can't recover from black screen while working

    Hi all,

Running Xubuntu 8.10 Intrepid on an Inspiron E1405 with Philips external monitor.

Everything seems fine except I get a black screen after different amounts of time (20 mins, hours) that I CAN'T recover from.

The monitor light is GREEN, so the monitor evidently hasn't gone into sleep mode or anything.

The system hasn't frozen (music keeps playing etc) but moving the mouse and the keyboard don't do anything.

After forced shutdown (holding down the power button) I can boot back in just fine and hope it doesn't happen again.

This happens WHILE typing so it can't have to do with the system being idle.

    Thanks for any help!

Re: Can't recover from black screen while working

    hardware problems?

I had something similar to this in xp tracked down to a bad mouse cable

a loose hdd ribbon cable once drove me nuts

anything with an IRQ can hang things

I had a MOBO with a semi working PCI socket

the IRQ was bad [lightning?] anything pluged in that socket would cause trouble!!

    some times it is hardware
OS upgrade with no hardware upgrade: $0.
having a smooth first install: ....priceless.

I don't think it's hardware related for two reasons:
    1. In XP I don't have this problem as with OpenSuse 11.1
    2. When restarting xorg I get the login screen just fine, but when I log in I get a blank again until I force a restart.

    I'd really appreciate any help.
