Yes, I have the same problem.
I am getting this message when trying to install through "Add/Remove":
I haveCode:Opera cannot be installed on your computer type (i386) Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.
atlas@u238:~$ uname -a
Linux u238 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 22:56:21 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
on Lenovo T61 and don't understand this error.
I had the same problem using Add/Remove Programs from the menu. Tried to Add it...gave me a popup asking me to enable a third party install....I said sure....then gave me the same error:
Opera cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)
Same error when installing from terminal:
michael@michael-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install opera

Package opera is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package opera has no installation candidate
michael@michael-desktop:~$ uname -a

So I went to http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?platform=linux and downloaded Opera...ran .deb file...opened installation installed fine. Might be the mirror for Opera package or Opera has a newer install
