Re: Experiments in refit shell to enable 9400M on MBP 5,1

    Thanks metatechbe.

Yes, I did kill v86d and waited for a while. Even when leaving the computer alone (doing nothing), the temperature never goes under 44º. Using the computer in normal browsing (NYtimes, flash blocked) makes the temperature go up to about 50-52º.

Running gpupwr using sudo works fine but, again, the temperature is stable in ~52º during normal use.

Could you post your xorg.conf and grub.cfg files to see if I got something wrong?

And a last thing, there is any way to control the screen brightness?

Thanks a lot for the help.

You need to run the gpupwr command with "sudo"

Here are the custom settings I define :
    - "On demand" governor for each CPU core (thanks to CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor applet from GNOME) : gain of 3 degrees
    Code:
    echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
    echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor
    - Disable Bluetooth : gain of 5 degrees
    Code:
    rfkill block 0
    - The following "PowerMizer"/"coolbits" options in xorg.conf : : gain of 2 degrees
    Code:
    Section "Device"
        Identifier "Device9400M"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        BoardName "NVIDIA 9400M"
    Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3"
    Option "coolbits" "1"
    BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
    EndSection
In total about 10 degrees colder ! QED

Screen brightness does not work but I did not try.

Apologies for the indirectly relevant question: why is v86d eating up the CPUs?

I've tried to "fix" the plymouth boot splash yesterday[*] by changing some parameters in /etc/default/grub including the use of uvesafb. This required v86d which ate up the CPUs and caused the fans to run at full speed. In the past I've done the same thing without any obvious v86d-problem.

    Thanks, Nikos

Successfully booted via EFI on MBP 5,1 (last week -- sorry for not taking the time to report this earlier)
I also (as emrys post 41) see not less than 52 degrees. Did not try all suggestions at post 42.

    Cheers, Nikos

I've been anxious to try this out on my Macbook Pro, but it looks like the link to the guide doesn't work anymore.

Do you know where I can find the instructions I need to follow?

    hi metatech,

thanks for the detailed community documentation post. really nice work!
hopefully, i can contribute some more information soon. been a while since i played with EFI, currently i'm running ubuntu in BIOS mode on my MBP5,1 (due to heavy load at work...).

    anyway, way to go!

    cheers,

Re: Experiments in refit shell to enable 9400M on MBP 5,1

Any news regarding a simplified (aka PPA or similar) way to enable 9400M in Oneiric?

The solid >62º I am getting in my MBP5,3 are killing me (and the battery).

Also, the affected people can mark this bug as affecting them in: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/592086

    Cheers.

Just found out about Ironhide... but is seems there is no support for Macbook Pro 5,3 or similar... https://launchpad.net/~mj-casalogic/+archive/ironhide/

Anyone has been successful using Ironhide, Bumblebee or similar?

    Any news for 12.04?

This thing is a battery killer!
