Headless Machine re-sumable Seasons

Problem: I would like to run my ubuntu 8.10 box with only a network cable and power cable plugged into my machine.

I can get this working with with Ubuntu 7.10 and VNC, for some reason I cannot get VNC working how I would like it with ubuntu 8.10.

I have installed Free NX it works the only problem what ever I have running at the time when I log off stops. Eg torrent programs.

Anyone have any ideas or help.
