Don't forget Mint. It supports media out-of-the-box.

There is no such thing as an all out-of-the-box OS. All OSs sometimes require additional drivers/software for hardware. This includes Windows and Mac.

PC/OS states that it is Ubuntu based & has all codecs & such installed for sound & video.

GeeXboX probably fits the bill for multimedia also.

Linux Mint should be on that list. It's able to play most (all?) media out of the box.

this is a link to a online store that sells really cheap but nice burned linux cd. there was a media center package cheap which i got that had these five cd set in it. it is not boxed or anything and the price is close to what a blank cd cost. they support the distributions they sell a cd with by five % and i have got many good things from there.
( including my debian coffe mugs).

there is a page on this site for gaming and commercial games too.

all the cd i linked to is for multimedia center and to get anyting out of it you will need a computer with a tv card. my tvcard needs a proccesor that has at least 1.6 ghz and around 800mb ram but i am sure one can fix a older computer and make use of it as media center using one of these cd and a tv card that is less hardware demanding.

other multimedia distros i know of and use is 64studio which is intened to be used as audio recording studio. so it does not come with the codecs to play multimedia but it is a perfect distro for making audio recording. it has comercial solutions and is used in some commercial smaller recording studio setups. i heard music produced on this distro from following links from the users testomonials and it is great. much better than anything else i tried for that purpose.

hope these informations can be usefull to someone.
