Glad to see someone approves of my little experiment with LXDE!

LXDE is only marginally heavier than OpenBox, with the addition of PCManFM and the Taskbar to make navigating a little easier.

You might like to use Miro http://www.getmiro.com/ which has up-to-date repositories for Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid.

I have an old Compaq Presario 1672 350 Mhz AMD K6-2, with 192 Meg RAM,
and it runs DSL (Damn Small Linux, TinyME 2009 Alpha 1 (Acorn),
TinyME-2008.0.1586, and TinyME-2008.0-Droplet. But as with any Alpha
or Beta release they are not without a few bugs. DSL is probably the
most stable, but I'm posting with Acorn using Wifi.

It will just cost you a few ISO downloads, along with a few CRD's to
start your testing. Just be sure to burn the ISO as DAO (Disk at Once)
at 4x or 8x, and verify the MD5SUM's.

Before installing any more distirbutions, I would check with your ISP to see if they support Linux. There are quite a few systems out there that are Windows only.

There a nice sticky in the OT section of the forums with more information than you want.

Personally, I'd probably use Debian, Damn Small or Slackware. I'm having problems getting anything to boot on my old computer, though, so I don't have any experience yet with any of those on (very) old hardware.
I do not use Ubuntu any more, nor have I ever used Gnome. Therefore, I tend to give advice that is distro- and DE-agnostic, which, while perhaps not the easiest way, will allow you to move freely between machines.

Stay away from Xubuntu. Try antiX, Vector, Debian or Slackware. Or some other really lightweight distro. See my signature for more links

Right know I installed Debian and I am already searching for ISP's support for Linux as said.

I'm choosing between DSL and Debian now.

There shouldn't be any problem from ISP, now I just have to wire all up and get it work.
