Ubuntu Pronounciation

So what's the deal? How are you supposed to pronounce "Ubuntu"? Is it first "U" as in "up" and then the rest of the u's are as in "poop"?

And what about "gnome"? I know that GNU is pronounced "genu".

Re: Ubuntu Pronounciation

I think it's something like:

Oooboontooo

and

Nome (Gnome) silent G. But that's just how I say it.

Re: Ubuntu Pronounciation

That's what I used to think, but then I found this in Wikipedia:

Ubuntu (IPA: /ùbúntú/)

So there's clearly a difference between the first U and the other ones. But what does that mean? I couldn't find a simple "dictionary" for IPA...

Re: Ubuntu Pronounciation

The best would be if Mark Shuttleworth would just upload an ogg vorbis file saying something like "I pronounce Ubuntu as Ubuntu".

Its actually a hard G. But I agree with the Lug Radio guys that saying it that way is lame. So I don't.

I don't say mac "oh-es-ten" I say "oh-es-ex." It sounds better, I don't care what the real way is. I also call Debian "dee-bee-en" instead of "de-bee-en" because one sounds like a middle class housewife while the other sounds like an almighty god of Linux.

Up until know I thought that it was supposed to be "dee-bee-en".... definitely sounds better anyways.

Re: Ubuntu Pronounciation

I end yup saying GNOME as guh'nome, and I incorrectly say Debian as Deebeein.

I'm wondering, though...how do you pronounce Xubuntu? It is zubuntu, eksubuntu, or ksubuntu? I usually say the last one to myself.

Re: Ubuntu Pronounciation

the correct prounciation sounds really weird and draws stares.. so i endorse ubuntu as U as in YOU bun as in, well, BUN.. like the ones you eat.. and tu as TO, youbuntoo ubuntu .. a lot easier to say, said the way it looks, and doesnt make people think its a 3rd world system
