Take any single image and apply whatever filter you want to it. It doesn't work. You should actually read the theory links provided on the page.
Yes, that's part of it, but look at the features. They get "smoothed out" too, and not just in the sense that they get blurry. They're blurred in "face space": noses are not too big and not to small, eyes are not too close together or too far appart, etc. Humans like balanced faces.
Help yourself: Search the community docs or try other resources.
