Unhappy Synaptic not showing the packages available for installation

Sir I have installed the ubuntu 8.10
and I am trying to load softwares but the synaptic is not showing the packages available on the net.

Last time I had used ubuntu, on typing compiz synaptic was showing all the other available softwares not the installed one only. But this time it is showing the installed ones only not the packages available to install.

I am not being able to install emerald theme manager, simple compiz desktop settings and all please help me out.

Same problem. Fresh 8.10 install, neither quick search nor search work. I can scroll directly to packages if I already know what I want though.
