Using either Empathy or Pidgin (or most other such apps), just set up an account with the Bonjour or Salut protocol on each computer.

It doesn't require centralization, it uses upnp and is nice and standardsy.

You could always setup your own XMPP network. I did that once, it was fun... but probably overkill.
The command line is a powerful tool. You should not type a command unless you know what it does.
