You can install any distro onto a thumb drive. A drive is a drive is a drive; Linux doesn't care whether it's booting from a flash drive or a conventional hard drive. Personally I like Puppy and Slitaz for flash drive usage since they are small and fast. Good luck1

im thinking of fedora, but i have another question

if i run these as liveCD OS's will i have to install executables? (Rpms, Debs, etc) or will i just have to have them in a folder?

Well actually, it's not that simple. Most Linux USB installs work like Live CD's rather than full installs. Some Live CD's can be made to run off a USB drive, but others cannot because they expect the system files to be a CD and won't look anywhere else.

    Re: best thumb drive linux?

I would recommend using an Ubuntu computer to run the Create a USB Startup disk. That way you can select an Ubuntu ISO (Ubuntu is good for USB boots, even if it is a little slow at times) and you can change how much persistence you want.

Provided that the computer you are sat on supports it, the eye candy you desire should be available in the form of Compiz.

The other distros are OK, but for me Ubuntu is the best. The smaller "light" distros tend to be either A) Very ugly B) lacking functionality or (most commonly C) Both.
