.bash_profile doesn't seem to be running when I log in

my .bash_profile doesn't seem to be running when I log in. it consists of the following lines:

    evolution --component=mail &
    source .profile
    If I source .bash_profile I get
evolution-shell-Message: Killing old version of evolution-data-server...
    but evolution mail starts.
    What am I doing wrong??

Re: .bash_profile doesn't seem to be running when I log in

Are you talking about logging in to the gnome desktop? When gdm starts gnome, it does source your .profile (or .bash_profile) but your X server may not have started at that time, so evolution or other gui apps may not run from a .profile or .bash_profile script.

If your goal is to have evolution (or any gui or X app) start when you log in to the desktop, a better way is to use Main Menu/System/Preferences/Startup Programs, click on Add, then enter the command in the dialog that appears.

There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers.
