What can you do with OpenSolaris anyways?

I hear people talking about OpenSolaris, but I've never had the opportunity to try it out for myself.

What's so different between it and what I can do already in Linux. O_o

Well, for one, it is better for developers since ZFS has the ability to roll back changes. Also, it is less prone to fragmentation than Linux is since it just came on the scene recently with a package manager and stuff, so it will be easier for vendors to support.

So its designed for developers? not much bait to draw people in D:

It also uses a really good implementation of GNOME, which makes it good for end-users.

It can't really last very long, as due to SCO not owning the UNIX copyright anymore, Novell could sue on the grounds that the SCO-Sun agreement to allow the code to be open sourced is invalid and that the project must be shut down.

You need developers to make a platform useful for "normal" users. A very "easy" platform with no apps available isn't worth much.

    I tend to disagree.

Novell stated in 2007, after its case vs SCO, that they will not sue over Unix rights. See this article. Some may not trust Novell after the Microsft interoperability agreement, but I personally find that to be FUD.

Solaris and OpenSolaris will be around a long time, especially as development platforms.

Side note: I don't find Windows to be "easy".

I thought that they wouldn't pursue UNIX rights over Linux, not anyone.

Alright guys, after installing OpenSolaris to my laptop, and playing around with it for an hour, I can say that its a very good OS for basic user functions.

I managed to get the Compiz Fusion port working, and so far it runs great with Open Office installed.

I think I'll be using this for a while
