ext4 default fs in fedora 11

Yes, and that means a /boot of ext3 with an LVM of 2 LV's for / and swap.
Mostly for newbies and mostly for expose ext4 more without the newbie knowing anything. Because it is Fedora. And the default install is not really a serious layout or upgrade path.

But the custom install dropdownbox on the installer allows whatever. Supposable even BTRFS will be in the F11 Alpha installer.

But when one is talking about converting ext3 to ext4, it depends on what (Kernel, e2fsprogs) and when (kernel 28.n newest e2fsprogs), and how(tunefs, debugfs options) you convert it.

You dont need a /boot of Ext3. Grub boots Ext4!
There are a bunch of us using Ext4 since it came to Jaunty and everything works fine.

If Jaunty has Kernel 2.6.29 it will also have Btrfs support possibly in the installer too.

True only if you're wiping everything and starting over. Those of us who have ext3 partitions that we want to keep have to convert them after installation, but that's pretty easy to do.

You should however have everything backed up though and be ready for a reinstall as Jaunty is still in Alpha and there is a possibility for serious breakage.
And i could be wrong but i think some features are left out by converting.

Jaunty was mainly gonna be a bug fix and boot performance increase release from the start though.
For 9.10 we'll have Plymouth and Login Experience/Facebrowser though.
And Packagekit if we dont have it for Jaunty.
Hopefully Anaconda too.

For definitions of "innovates" equal to "uses much less tested technology by default". I, for one, am very happy that we choose our default filesystem very conservatively, while retaining the ability for users who care to choose a more risky filesystem.

I'm very glad that Red Hat employs many infrastructure developers. It's great that they aggressively push that technology out to testing. But "agressively push technology out to testing" and "create an environment that Just Works" are goals with a significant component of competition - you really can't do both. If you want to be closer to the bleeding edge, perhaps Fedora is a better fit for you.

Ubuntu doesn't have to be Fedora. Ubuntu doesn't want to be Fedora.

All of which were in Fedora ages ago. Also, I can't help noticing the fact that in the past they said PackageKit would be in Intrepid.

They don't have Login Experience/Facebrowser.
I dont know whats up with Packagekit though.

I was referring to the Fedora default install as that is the name of the thread.

And it looks like all the scare tactics about ext4 are all about bad disk drive firmware.

Like I said, there was only a few bugs about zero bytes caused by non recovered freespace in the extents.

There has not been any new bugs in ext4 found since the last e2fsprogs was released. And frankly ext4 on a /boot f/s buys very little.

First off upstream does the innovation, distros just pick and choose what they want.RAOF pretty much said everything I was going to but what I will add is alot of people dont realise that fedora is only Red Hat's playground for RHLS.This allows them to push the boat out and have the latest and greatest of everything.The prime example is EXT4, yes theres some bugs but that doesnt matter for Fedora where as with us its important that the file systems is 100% _very_ stable.

PS Slug: Grub only works with EXT4 because its been patched.
