ALSA Upgrade Script

The script runs properly on my computer. However, it seems that the driver isn't upgraded.

When I checked with the command $ cat /proc/asound/version, it returned :
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.16.
Compiled on Jul 25 2009 for kernel 2.6.24-24-generic (SMP).

which means that it is still not upgraded. I double checked with the command $ wget -O alsa-info.sh http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash ./alsa-info.sh, I got the following msg:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.16
Library version: 1.0.20
Utilities version: 1.0.20

However, when I used the command $aplay --version, it returned with:

aplay: version 1.0.20 by Jaroslav Kysela <perex@perex.cz>

I have this kind of mismatch too, except that my /proc/asound/version shows 1.0.18rc3

I had followed a different lead and manually compiled and installed these:

alsa-driver-1.0.20
alsa-lib-1.0.20
alsa-utils-1.0.20

- and for a few days it solved my problem: internal speakers not muting when headphone jack is inserted. Now it has reverted, and reinstalling version 1.0.20 doesn't seem to work (or the installation fails).

I will try the upgrade script, but I'd still like to know how the problem found its way back after having been eliminated...

No special modifications, this script works like a dream with LinuxMint 7 KDE

Props where props are due. Thanks, mate! Minor sound issue on the headphone jack, this cleared it right up. Think I will skip gateway next time and try a more linux friendly system.

Ok, the script solved the problem again (so far). Thanks. However, it also installed a bunch of rubbish in my "Applications | Sound & Video" menu. Is that necessary?

Unfortunately, the script didn't make sound work on my system:

Acer Aspire 6935G
Ubuntu 8.10, x86_64, kernel 2.6.27-14
Used last version of the script (alsa 1.0.20, rev 1.17)

The script completed successfully.

Doing cat /proc/asound/version tells alsa 1.0.20 is installed

Mixers show all channels activated and non-muted.

The "Playback" tab of Pulseaudio shows applications that are playing audio, but however I just get silence.

I get no errors, and the Intel card is detected: aplay -l

But then speaker-test just makes silence... no sound at all.

It seems there's no way of getting sound from this Acer in 8.10.

Btw: yes, the sound hardware works in Windows.

Please, soundcheck. Make your fantastic script work with the alsa version 1.0.21 released today (I think). There's something I need for my hdsp card, I'm quite sure.
So please, please, please.

Please could someone advise when sound will just fully work out of the box, and whether these fixes have been rolled into a major release?

Basically - in the future, I'd like to buy an Ubuntu-loaded machine and just be able to run more than one sound-emitting app and just have them working...
