    I did this and it fixed my no-sound problem. However, only one application can play sound at a time. Any way to remedy this?

    I was able to upgrade my ALSA to the latest version, still I don't have any sound. I'm actually lost. This is my 1st time having troubles with sound when using ubuntu.

    @syntax-error: I don't see anything obviously wrong with your alsa-info (but I'm not an expert). Try the snapshot (-s) build to see if the issue has been resolved upstream, and if that doesn't help, you probably should post to the alsa-dev list as the OP suggests

    One quick update.

    I reinstalled everything from scratch (ubuntu 10.04) guess what! I have sound! but, after i restart it goes away. Well after 3 installations I ended up not restarting nor installing anything and started to give you this update.

    Could somebody help? I mean how come the sound goes away after I restart? Well I thought that the nvidia driver was causing it but then it should not affect the audio right. audio -- graphics two different things.

    During the installation by the way, Audio is also ok, I mean if you do a backspace on an empty textbox during the phase where you are suppose to enter your username I hear a sound.
