The other problem is that most keyboard shortcuts won't work when you're running a full screen app. Only ones at a lower level like ctrl+alt+F1/bkspc or whatever, so it would need to be like those.
It's been this way on every distro I've used for the last six years. Except I think compiz messes it up. Seems like when I ran compiz I had to change it to ctrl-alt-end, but I figured that was because I was using compiz with KDE. I assumed the default configuration of vanilla Ubuntu would honor the customary keystrokes.

If ctrl-alt-esc isn't working in Ubuntu, it needs to be. It's one of the more useful shortcuts around.

I agree entirely with that. I agree that in an ideal world everything just works!! But otherwise these "Emergency Exits" can be a "life saver"! Even "OS for Dummies" has Crtl-Alt-Del to escape from rogue processes that have stopped responding! I get fed up with all the nannying everywhere in life these days

I prefer not to disable Ctrl+Alt+Bksp by default.
It is very useful even without need of Xorg.conf.

Geeks are still the ones who provide the tech support, and the 3-finger salute to kill X is still a common part of such support.

You don't need Ctrl-Alt-Backspace until you NEED it--and you can't predict if you will need it in advance. I think it's ridiculous and asinine to turn it off.

Exactly. This isn't just "the geeks crying because Ubuntu is being dumbed down", this is a tool being taken out of the toolbox for helping other people. Sure, I can enable this on all my ubuntu machines (all umpteen of them... sigh), but it's an extra step when you are helping someone else who needs this feature.

Oh well, what can you do.
