It's been this way on every distro I've used for the last six years. Except I think compiz messes it up. Seems like when I ran compiz I had to change it to ctrl-alt-end, but I figured that was because I was using compiz with KDE. I assumed the default configuration of vanilla Ubuntu would honor the customary keystrokes.

If ctrl-alt-esc isn't working in Ubuntu, it needs to be. It's one of the more useful shortcuts around.
