EEE pc - problems with webcam/microphone

I am running a GNOME version of Ubuntu on my Asus 900 EEE-pc but there is not any support for the webcamera or microphone, I downloaded Skype which works except for these two setbacks... I am also unsure of how to install new software, I installed Skype by downloading debian .deb files, but I was looking for Cheese which I found by searching for webcam software but I don't know how to d/l it. The main problems are not being able to get the microphone or the webcam working because I need to use these and I guess I#ll go back to the native Xandros OS if I can't get them working. Thanks,

    For cheese:
System menu, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager.
Click Status button then show All packages.
Find cheese in the list of packages, rightclick and select Mark for Installation. Press the Apply button on tool bar to install it.

Not sure about the microphone yet, I find sound mixers on all computers to be contrary and confusing. My asus 900 won't record sound yet either but haven't yet had a chance to search a bit more for fixes....
