This is what it should look like when you press and release the Ctrl key:
Code:
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
root 0x13b, subw 0x0, time 16309747, (2,37), root:(1156,587),
state 0x0, keycode 37 (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False
KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x4000001,
root 0x13b, subw 0x0, time 16310227, (2,37), root:(1156,587),
state 0x4, keycode 37 (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False
Your output is remapped, either by Compiz, Gnome or applesmc.
It looks like a shortcut for increasing/decreasing volume/brightness or triggering compiz effects.
The trivial problem would be that you have mapped Ctrl within CCSM or Gnome's shortcuts dialog.
