my laptop broke down which one to get

    I had a lenovo 3000 n200 for 12 months and 2 weeks old.
It broke down lastnight, and it seems a complete motherboard replacement is the fix.
So I guess the way to go is buying a new one.

Does anyone have any ideas about what to get.
    My old one had a wsxga+ thats 1680x1050 on a 15".
This is the lowest resoltion I can cope with.
I like being able to look at huge amount of codelines.

But it seems only expensive laptops have high resolution.
Does anyone know where to get high dpi laptops,
that doesn't use high end stuff for everything.

I found a thinkpad r61 with this resolution for 750 euros.
    Thats over 1000 dollars.
But I don't think I dare buy lenovo again...

I'm abit disappointed with the lifetime of this device,
it's been used 20 hours a day but still...
more that a year would be nice, also the battery life, went very down the last couple of months.

I got a 4.5 year old thinkpad that still works perfectly.
    Running 8.10 on a lenovo 3000 n200!
    Fingerprint reader doesn't work.

Here's a site that compiles a list of laptops that are compatible with Linux.

I would suggest that you avoid any lappie with an nVidia video chip-set. Many times these are a pain to setup with X11. Some people say the same about ATI's chip-set, but I have two lappies (Compaq Presario and a Dell) that work fine.

Moved to Main -> hardware nad laptops, you should get better help there.
I am infallible, you should know that by now.

    I recommend a real Thinkpad.

The X61s laptops are reasonably priced at this time and they are fine laptops.

Just get something easily that can be easily customized. Example: a Dell XPS (any model) will usually have a great HDD and it can be modded to run almost any OS with GRUB. Also, Acer has some great options too, and their laptops just look better on the outside.

I'm currious as to what happened to your current machine? Was it flexing of the motherboard that killed it?

Batteries only last 2-3 years or 300 cycles whichever occurs first. If you used battery every day, then you are lucky to get a year out of it.

What is the model of your older Thinkpad? How do the two compare in quality?

I would recommend a used T43P 15" with flexview screen. Runs linux well, and has a high-res screen. If you can find them, they run $300-400 depending on condition. Avoid T41 and T42--their graphic chips tend to delaminate.

I'm not sure of the quality of the new lenovo's. Nor would I risk spending a lot of money to find out.

If you're a Linux fan, consider a vendor that provides Linux (usually Ubuntu) pre-installed - that way you know the hardware will be fully supported. I went with System 76 (http://www.system76.com) & love my machine

Sadly, I wouldn't recommend any Lenovo laptop if you're picky on screens. They use very cheap screens compared to the days of IBM (unless you get the W series).

I hear HP and Sony provide good screens with their laptops, but they come with other problems as well.
