    Thanks for this HOW-TO.

    I have installed everything and it seems to be working very well. My only question in after logging in, the Ubuntu "box" in the middle of the screen is there for several minutes, and my Gdesklets don't appear until it goes away. I assume some process is going on, but is there a way I can speed that up?

    i've noticed this when using gdesklets and the only thing i've found that seems to fix it is not to have gdesklets startup when loging in just launch them after the desktop is up on my computer they hang for a minute if i run them on startup.

    if your talking about the login screen where you enter in your username & password try
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm
    you must have removed it when you uninstalled some packages.

    nope i've been fighting with this one myself if i do find the answer i'll be sure and let you know how i fixed it though.
