I saw a friend using Google sketchup with XP and it seemed to work very well so I wondered if there was something like it that would work in Ubuntu 8.04?

You could run it under WINE.

Not exactly equivalent but Wings 3D is easy to use. Alternatively you may run Sketchup using Wine.
