    Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice

If you're like a lot of folks on here you have a cutting-edge system that spends most of its time idling on a blank screen or running a cool screensaver. It's possibel to donate your spare cycles to cancer and other medical research using Folding@Home.

There are a couple of Ubuntu teams, but we're in the process of attempting to unify behind the team with the most points. Here's the link.

    And here's the wiki page.

Also, here's a great post on Hackaday about tips for competitive folding.

Come join the team and have some competitive geeky fun while helping cure diseases! What could be better?

How well does it work with systems that have a (relatively) low uptime? As in, my nice machine is a dual booting gamer- can it start itself automatically? Any bugs?

It can start itself automagally at boot on either side (Linux or Windows). I've got a personal team (24 machines) running on both platforms and I haven't seen any problems.

I'd join the team but I've already put so much work into my own team

    Nice!
I would keep it off of my windows though, as when I boot into that it will be gaming only, then a reboot.

When I finish it, I will start folding.

    (Windows induced reinstalls...)

It won't effect your Windows gaming as the client program only uses spare clock cycles.

I believe it was Ars Technica that did a test and found that the WINDOWS client had almost literally zero effect on responsiveness. The only reason I don't run it while I'm working on my laptop at work is that it means that the laptop gets hot and the fan runs full-time which is annoying. I run it on everythine else.

Well, the answer to your question is that SETI@Home is about to be completed. They're running out of work. So there's no chance of Team Ubuntu passing everyone else and ruling the world, which should clearly be our objective.

Talking Re: Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice

As you can see, good old fashioned American competitiveness is the real motivator here. I heard there's something about "curing something" involved here somewhere as well, but mostly I just want to be BETTER than someone else and this is my big opportunity.
