Re: Folding@Home Team Ubuntu recruiting notice

I've been folding for a couple of years now and usually have multiple instances running over night and through the day when I'm out. Sorry Ubuntu team I'm a team of one Team_Pooh. I think I'm in the top 2 to 3 percentile of contributors.
    It's okay, I'm a limo driver

I realize there have been some problems running F@H on 10,10, but why not run SMP work units instead of multiple instances of the classic client? The points for A3 SMP WUs are far more than what you can get running even 6 instances on your Phenom II X6. I'm getting ~3300 points for some WUs done in 7.5 hours (60xx projects) or ~5600 points in 15.5 hours for 6701 or 6702 WUs. This is on a Phenom II X6 1090T with an easy overclock to 3.6 Ghz (stock at 3.2).

I'm taking one for the team by cheating a bit, running the Windows 6.30 client natively. (My wife and I are doing a Windows 7/Office 2010/Sharepoint project.) You can do this also using WINE or in a virtual Windows machine, and it doesn't require 64-bit Linux.

Here is a work-around discussion for the Linux 64-bit client.

CORRECTION: I'm getting these units done in under 6.5 hours, including upload. I'm still trying to understand why some WUs, such as the 67XXs, seem to penalize, and if it's only on AMD CPUs that this is happening.

There's more information about the 10.10 Kernel issues on foldingforum.org.

And here's an explanation as to why folding one unit at a time is actually better for you as well as the project.

PS It feels like Canada here this AM. Temperature is -12ºC.

Thanks again djchandler for the info.

What kind of heatsink and or cpufan are you using? (cpu cooler)
What temp do you get with your Phenom 2 x6 at 3.6 ghz when running F@H and the 6 cores at 100% ?

PS: It feels like i am in Kansas City metro this morning, only -4ºC here

No, they're not that powerful, but seeing as I plan on folding for the foreseeable future, even a small saving a year is a big thing. Going by your estimation of 150W, running flat out 365.4 days a year, would work out as,

    Code:
    .15kW x 8769.6Hours/Year = 1315.44kWH/Year @ €0.1325/kWH = €174.30/Year
    That's a lot of money >.<

Instead, look at it running for 15 Hours a day,

    Code:
    .15kW x 5481Hours/Year = 822.15kWH/Year @ €0.1325/kWH = €109/Year
That's a saving of €65.30/Year, whilst still doing my bit.

I measured the electrical power usage of this machine over a period of some days. @ 19 cents a kW it costs $54-/year to run. That is Oz dollars which are about the same as the US dollar these days.

So that gives some idea of the costs. If the CPU was working harder &/or the drive was working it would cost more.

I doubt very much that a Celeron would use less than the PIII 700Mhz.
Very true, as the above calculations show >.< I used use a PIII Katami @ 451Mhz as my main server once upon a time, running FreeNAS

Also, I've managed to convince my school's IT guy to allow me to run F@H on a few school machines, C2Ds OCd to 3.2Ghz. I've four of these machines running, but as of yet, they havn't uploaded a single WU, which makes me think something's gone wrong. Must have a look at them.

Hmm... true about the power hike; I was more considering the monthly increase if you ran the machine normally.

The computers in your school are overclocked? that's incredible; I would love to go to your school
The above post definitely does not contain any sarcasm at all.

They're overclocked because I did it Though to be honest, the system isn't great. Individually the computers are powerful, and tailored to their roles (the DCG ones for example have powerful graphics cards for easy CAD rendering) but everything is stored centrally on a server, accessed over a 100MBit network, which just isn't fast enough to run >200 computers, especially when it could be 90-100 under heavy use at any one time >.<
