Are you doing a "Dual Boot with Windows?"...

You could also "Boot" into "Recovery Mode", then see if Ubuntu will go to the last good config and get you back up and running...

I didn't see anything about a last good configuration.
You meant the thing like on the GRUB menu you pick Ubuntu 8.10 2.6.27-9 (recovery) thing, right?

Yes, that's what I meant... I had to use it a couple of times and it got me back up and running... I can't say it will fix your problem but until some of the experts here get online it's a good place to try for now...

Sorry for bump, but I found it was my ATI driver (I think)!
I just won't use the driver off of their site and instead use the Ubuntu one.

I've been screwed around by ATI's flakey drivers so many times (both windows and linux) that I would not pick up an ati card if I saw one lying around at the tip. Best place for them.

If you're stuck with one inside a laptop make do with the reduced features of the OOS drivers. Next time choose a laptop with nvidia.
