Some sound is broken (vlc, flash in firefox) for external USB audio

My headphone jack in my laptop is broken so I use a usb sound adapter for audio. This has worked fine for me, but when I recently reinstalled and upgrade KDE 4, only system sounds worked (I'm using 4.2 beta 2 right now, but had the same problems in 4.1). After a recent amarok update, amarok sound started working. I still cannot get sound in flash to work in firefox (or konqueror), and sound in VLC also does not work.

I kept getting messages about pulseaudio failing, so I ran 'sudo apt-get install pulseaudio' and the message went away, I presume that means that pulseaudio is working now. I thought it shipped with KDE, was I mistaken?

When I try to run "alsamixer" I get the following message:

    Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

By the way, I've disabled my onboard sound by blacklisting snd_hda_intel.

When I try to play sound in VLC, I get the following command-line output:

    Code:
ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such file or directory

When I run kmix I get

    Any ideas?

Re: Some sound is broken (vlc, flash in firefox) for external USB audio

The following command solved my problem. I wonder if there's a way to do this from KDE?

    Code:
    asoundconf set-default-card 1

I found the answer to the VLC problem in another thread. I'm not sure if you've found it yet so I will replay anyway.

    Go to tools>preferences>audio...
in the output settings select OSS from drop down....
    where you see /dev/dsp
    change it to /dev/dsp1

that worked for the poster and for me after reading it.
hope this works for you as well. Good luck.

The easiest way to get a usb headset under control is to use the Pulse Audio Volume Control which unfortunately is not included in the Ubuntu install along with a bunch of other necessary stuff. But you can fix a lot of that by going here
