Angry Oh no, I've broken something already

Well everything was working a little bit to well for my liking, so in my efforts to figure out a way to monitor/control cpu temps and fans I messed up my synaptic packages oh or maybe a related app and it's saying frequency scaling is unsupported after boot up. It says the system maybe misconfigured which I'm sure it is NOW.

If anyone could tell me how to get back to where I started with out reinstalling ubuntu tht would be great

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is. It seems

    it's a laptop vaio intel core2 duo T5500 1.66ghz
    and was working perfectly

    Thanks

Reboot > during grub splash, hit escape > Recovery mode > Enter (let finish)
Repair Broken Packages > Enter (if it asks about updates hit N) (let finish)
Try to fix X server > Enter (Let finish)
    Resume normal Boot > Enter

    hope this helps

Is cpu scaling turned off in you BIOS? That message pop's up for me if I have the cpu frequency scaling monitor in my panel and I have cpu scaling turned off in bios.
