    bricked my laptop?? =(

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my HP Compaq laptop (nc6230). I had it running great for a few days. Then one day I left it alone for 10 minutes. My wife said she saw it on the desktop screen, then on the screensaver. When I got back, the screen was black. Now I can't even power on my laptop. No lights, no beeps, nothing!

I think my laptop motherboard is completely dead. So I have two questions:
    1. Is there anything that I might be overlooking that might fix it?
    2. Is this something that could have been caused by Ubuntu? I would guess it's a longshot...but then again, my laptop has been running fine on Windows for 3 years; 2 days after installing Ubuntu, it's broken.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I don't think Ubuntu is at fault but it could have caused your computer to overheat... but generally it should shutdown if it gets too hot. I think your computer just died. It just happened to be while running Ubuntu.

you could try to take out the battery and the powercord out.
If the powersupply overheated, you should take it out of the wall-socket for about a minute.
    Else your laptop did die

first I would check the power supply and the battery.

Second it is possible it was "just your lucky day". I have had
this happen twice lately. Once a Dell laptop that I had been using
for months for testing. I sold it and the next day the fan quit, it over heated, and cooked the processor. The other was a desktop that I had just
upgraded. for 2 days it worked fine. I unplugged it delivered it, and when the customer got it home, nada, bupkis, zip, zilch. I ended up replacing the board and power supply.

No power, no lights, no bios = hardware!

Nothing to do with any OS you had or have installed.
