    SMC2532W-B card does not work

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed in a dual boot configuration on a Compaq Presario 2135. My SMC 2532W-B PCMCIA high power wireless adapter will not connect using Ubuntu. That same card works OK using Windows XP, but using Intrepid, it apprears to be recognized, identifies the network, but apparently can't get an IP address, then disconnects. The network I am trying to use is unsecured.

On the same computer, and the same network, my 8187 based USB adapter works on both operating systems.

Would someone please help me to diagnose the cause of this problem

    Jim

Re: SMC2532W-B card does not work

Your card is suppose to be usable as-is with Linux.

Go to section 3.6 at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper which will show you how to troubleshoot

Re: SMC2532W-B card does not work

I am trying to work thru your suggestions, and first I find references to ndiswrapper. As I am using intrepid and the network manager is supposed to be handling my card, I am reluctant to install ndiswrapper and mix the whole situation up with both drivers running.

Section 3.6.2 says to open System | Administration | Networking. Intrepid does not have a networking under system administration. Under system administration is only "network tools". Network tools takes me to devices and other things presuming that I have a network working. Thus I cannot find properties and also the enable roaming.

I guess the problem is that I haven't the slightest idea what these things are telling me. I am ready to give up until I get to a place where I can access an ethernet connection.

What follows is the results I got from various terminal commands:

First with the SMC card, which does not work:

    jim@jim-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -C network

    Sorry for being so impatient.

    Jim
