Linux is *nix in the same way that a Ford Bronco is an automobile.

Technically Linux is not Unix, because it is not certified according to the Single Unix Specification, but Linux is very much Unix-like. So, while it's technically incorrect to call Linux "Unix", it's not very far off.

Linux is not "Unix", since only proprietary OS's can be called "Unix" (I think).

Linux is neither Unix like or a Unix clone because Linux is a kernel, nothing more and nothing less. The GNU OS (wich is the actual OS we use) is Unix like. The emphasis here lies on Unix like because it was written completely from scratch and although it behaves like a Unix OS and is fully Posix compliant it does not contain a single line of Unix code.

Not really, BSD is Unix, and it's free.

Although most Unixes have indeed been proprietary operating systems made to sun on a specific hardware, like Irix for SGI machines, Solaris for Sun systems and HP_UX for HP's hardware..)

Gnu/Linux isn't Unix because it isn't based on any certified Unix, and isn't certified on it's own either. However it pretty much fills the actual standard, so it's best described as "Unix-like" or "Unix-clone".
