    Lightbulb What things DONT you need?

    You just finished a fresh install of ubuntu. You notice that some things take too much cpu/memory, some processes that are of no use to you are running, or some settings you disabled that increased the overall snapiness of your machine what are this things? (XFCE, KDE, GNOME, *BOX..anything..really anything!)

    Ill start, i use xfce and i dont need to view window contents while i move or resize them..on my machine this is disabled

    I can't think of any processes or settings I change, but I get rid of about half the apps first thing.

    Also, how do you disable window contents while moving or resizing? :O

    Ah, well I keep compositing disabled. Thanks, though.

    Well, I feel like an idiot. I thought you were talking about the opacity settings in Window Manager Tweaks. Got it set, now.

    Anything else to make a slow computer run better, feel free to let me know.

    & sorry for going offtopic.

    Great thread idea! I don't need (in general, not distro-specific):

    * Xorg: Xvesa is lighter and better
    * 6 TTYs
    * Most daemons. I only need 21 tasks for a blank desktop.
    * Graphical network managers. I just use ifconfig, iwconfig, and udhcpc/dhcpcd

    Re: What things DONT you need?

    For me, it's not so much a matter of what I remove or disable, but what I don't install after having done a clean install.

    I don't install

    • A litany of multimedia apps;
    • Samba, Apache, or any other server software;
    • Thunderbird or any other email client;
    • Extra language support (the default is quite adequate);
    • All kinds of high-end GUI-visual enhancers; or
    • Plug-ins for Firefox

    That about sums it up for me.
    Have you ever found something in the second-to-last place you looked?

    I don't need waffles in my CD-R drive.

    Those darn waffles.
