    ok thanks,

still what i dont understand, is that, the serial is being assigned, and device appears to be detected properly. but if i try to open the port, and communicate with the device, then it crashes the system

I thing that this is not a problem, as matches the 0x0001 product. If you change this to 0x0031 then the system will know that your modem uses GSM07.07 and GSM07.05 commands. Make that change using sudo gedit and after reboot, insert modem, do again ls /dev/ttyUSB* and then try the command sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial2.conf to find out if stucks and if can communicate with the serial port. I used another name for the configuration file in order NOT to change yours.

Our problem is that only common thing we have is the modem!

I am not sure if your h/w or the version of Ubuntu you are using, make the USB port setup different.
Using Ubuntu 8.04 I rarely had "stucks" running wvdial.

it froze again, but weird, i made a mistake on the wvdial2.conf

    [Dialer Defaults]
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB2

    while ls /dev/ttyU* returns
    jessy@jessy:~$ ls /dev/ttyU*
    /dev/ttyUSB0

    Re: 8.10 and USB Modem ZTE MF636BP / MF636

It "froze" after the sudo wvdialconf ?
Any message? or just stuck and need a reboot?

    Lets summarize.
I propose to keep post#8 of http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1065934 as the starting point.

At this thread, post#4, user neu2buntu writes that he uses a similar modem on Aspire One with 8.10 (bold to 8.10 as a possibility to use it, or wait some days for the new Ubuntu 9.04).

What Aspire One are you using? Do you have HD or just the Solid State Drive (8GB)?

If you have another way to connect to the internet (WiFi or ethernet) try to update via System > Administration > Update Manager.

Other notes: Before running wvdial, wait for the blue led 3G indication (modem). Wait also 10-15 seconds to see if any message appear regarding the AutoRun CD of the modem. If so close it (do not run any application from this virtual CD).
