How to install and configure X Server...

    Hi,
I've just moved from Ubuntu to Arch in hope of a faster distribution. The installation went well. However, whenever I boot my lappy, I'm dropped to a root shell. Can anyone help on how to install the X Server in Arch? I have an Intel 82815 Graphics Card. Thanks...

That is the installation. It only gives you the base/core packages needed to get a root console.

You will have to create a user account, and do a full system upgrade, reboot.

Then you can add xorg and your video driver, configure xorg.conf, and then you can add gnome or whatever you use.

Just follow this guide from start to finish.

You can also look at this old guide here.... but make sure that you use the latest instructions from the official ArchWiki.

Hi, thanks for your replies. I followed the official guide but whenever I type startx, I get this error:

    (EE) No devices detected.

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
    giving up.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you a) install the drivers for your card, b) edit the xorg.conf autogenerated in your root directory by Xorg -configure, and c) copy that file (after testing it with Xorg -config) to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

If it still doesn't work, try using the VESA drivers.

Trying with the vesa driver enables the X server to start. However, my monitor shuts itself off and turns back on with an error on the screen. Any other tips?
