boot without hard drive

i have a macbook c2d with a bad hard drive - mechanical failure
i want to use the live cd to install a copy to a usb until i get a new hd
i burned u 8.10-64 and tried to boot from the cd but it after i get past the boot settings and splash screen keeps trying to initialize my hard drive (which of course doesn't work)

is there some boot setting i need to use to get u-live load into ram
i have 2gb of ram which should be enough

Are you sure that you are on 64-bit architecture with a c2d? Also, have you tried removing the HDD entirely?

yes, it's an intel-64. before my hard drive went i was dual booting with arch64

no, should I? I guess I'm going to have to eventually.

took out the hard drive last night but that didn't change a thing
but i realized something, it's the cd i burned.
the error i get is this

buffer i/o error on device sr0

i've never had trouble burning cd's before, but i don't use my wife's laptop much either

the checksums were fine after i downloaded the file
should i reburn the disc?

I've had the same problem with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu cds, both the 32- and 64-bit versions. Has anyone come up with a definitive answer to this?
