"I almost never use a download manager"

I don't even know what a download manager is, or what its function would be. Maybe one of you kind people could explain it?

A download manager is a program that usually speeds up downloads, and has the option to pause/resume/stop/remove downloads. It also organizes all your downloads in an easy to read list.
These days, my computers change so much, all I can say for sure here is ubuntu.

Ok. How does it speed up downloads?

It speeds up downloads by making multiple connections to the server. Some download managers can also connect to multiple servers that have the same file.

Re: Favourite ftp clients and download managers

I've been a long time user of FileZilla on Windows. When I made the switch to Linux, I had a hard time finding a FTP program I liked. FileZilla wasn't a Linux app at the time. I must have tried a half dozen programs. I was even contemplating using WINE to get FileZilla to work.

It's weird. When I was switching to Linux, for the most part I had no trouble finding programs that I liked. Using OOo instead of Microsoft Office... no problem. GIMP instead of Photoshop... I have never looked back. Finding a Linux replacement for the open-source FileZilla... couldn't do it.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite things about FileZilla 2 in Windows didn't make the transition to 3.0 for Windows and Linux. And there is one feature found in the Windows version that isn't in the Linux version. But still, FileZilla is my favorite.

I don't use a download manager other than what is built into Firefox.
