    Well I did what you said, and actually I could boot into old root.disk, I also did a grub update, but rebooting again in ubuntu it is still unbootable. And if I edit the grub hitting E key I see still there hd0,3 and sda3... it's like it didn't store the changes...

    bcbc - ran the automated migration script, which gave a green light on everything, but am having an issue getting back in to my linux installs via the wubi grub loader.

    - Have wubi 10.04 installed on Windows 7 (upgraded from XP, which is actually installed on a different hard drive than 7 is)
    - Used free space on the XP drive to create sda2 and sda3 (ext4 and swap, respectively) for the migrated install. I'm not sure why the wubi install sees that drive as sda instead of the drive which is actually used for /host under wubi (sdb where windows 7 is), but not sure if that is an actual issue.
    - checked grub version under wubi (1.98 ), so good there.
    - ran script with --no-bootloader option. All green, no errors, the grub update at the end added the new linux to the wubi grub list.
    - rebooted to check the new install. Went from windows bootloader to Ubuntu, and then got the following:

    Try (hd0,0): NTFS5: No wubildr
    Try (hd0,1): EXT2:
    With a blinking cursor at the end of that, and stuck. I'm thinking it is a problem with the wubi grub loader, but ??? Any help is appreciated.

    @Trynthlas,
    I would guess that when you installed Win7 it used the XP install as the boot partition for winxp/win7 (that's what Windows tends to do by default: it adds the newer version's boot files to the old version's partition). And so the choice to boot Ubuntu may actually be originating on /dev/sda1.

    Perhaps copying wubildr from /dev/sdb1 (or the partition where wubi is actually installed) to the XP partition will fix this. I'm not sure why it would give up looking for wubildr just because it encountered an ext4 partition, but that part of wubi is largely undocumented so it's hard to be definitive.

    If copying wubildr doesn't work, post the results of the bootinfoscript and this should give a clearer picture of what's going on.

    Alright, well after making a new Live CD to run the bootinfoscript I've got it here. The output is rather large!

    First, I did copy the contents of C: (win 7 install)/ubuntu/winboot (which has wubildr, wubildr.cfg, and wubildr.mbr) to (win XP install)/ubuntu/winboot

    Attempting to enter the Ubuntu option from the windows boot loader after that produced the same as my last post.

    I am confused why it seems to indicate that sda2 is still NTFS formatted, when the migrate script should have re-formatted it to ext4, correct?

    I meant to copy \wubildr from the root directory on /dev/sdb1 to the root directory on /dev/sda1.

    If that still doesn't work, you could install grub2's bootloader instead (that's eventually what you'll have to do unless you're planning on booting your migrated ubuntu using something like easybcd.) It's not a real risk since you're just going to overwrite the MBR. Which you can easily replace again using the live CD.

    To install grub2 bootloader from live CD:
    Code:
    sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
    sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
    To reinstall a windows equivalent bootloader if you're not happy with grub2 (ignore warnings - they refer to different use of lilo):

    sudo apt-get install lilo
    sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
    PS Yes it's puzzling that fdisk sees /dev/sda2 as ntfs and blkid sees it as ext4. Must be an anomaly in mkfs or fdisk. Everything else looks exactly the way I'd expect it.

    Oops. Well, that (copying the correct wubildr) worked and I was able to load into the new /dev/sda2 partition-installed ubuntu, from which I am posting! I'll have to work on the grub or lilo bootloader later, but seems like I'm in better shape. Thank you!

    On the /dev/sda2 oddity, I attached a screenshot of what the Disk Utility program sees it as. I have a way to edit the partition type (and label), and there is also a checkbox for 'Bootable' - not sure what if any of these things I want to mess with?

    Cool! Glad that worked.

    Regarding the partition type, now's the time to mess with it before you diverge from the existing wubi install. But messing with partitions has some risks so take appropriate backup measures. There are a number of tools that can change partition types.

    I haven't had the time to figure this out. I've run a few tests but haven't achieved a consistent result so I don't want to publish it yet. And then I got busy doing other stuff.

    Don't try upgrading to grub2. That will just break your wubi. There are some other differences between the older wubis that use grub-legacy e.g. the fstab, boot files, file system type.

    I'll try and spend some more time on this...
