UK Free Software Network (ISP supporting free software)

I'm not really from UK, but someone posted a link to this isp from uk.

According to this:

Our promise

We promise that all of the profits made by the UKFSN.ORG operation will be used to fund Free Software in the UK.
Just thought I'd let you know.

Re: UK Free Software Network (ISP supporting free software)

This is a bit misleading, it is not FREE Software as in Ubuntu/Linux and Sourceforge. It appears to be software included with an ISP contract. I couldn't see any application software listed.

Where did you get that from?

Update:The first student to benefit from this programme has already been selected. He is an established contributor to Ubuntu and maintains a general backup utility while also supporting several other Free Software activities. More details will be announced shortly.

I clicked on "this isp from uk"

I'm still not clear how they get "profits" if the software is free, or do you pay for the "free" open source software.

They don't sell software. They are a ISP (internet service provider). They sell internet access.

Wink Re: UK Free Software Network (ISP supporting free software)

Maybe the ISP runs their equipment on a Linux-based system like Ubuntu Server, although the server program is free to download and install, the Support (for professional Users) from Canonical is not free - they have to pay the Bills like everyone else and that revenue helps with running costs. Likewise, the ISP being a commercial venture has to charge fees to cover its overheads, electricity, cups of coffee etc!
