I'm sorry but this HOWTO will only work with certain ubuntu alternative .iso files.

    Please try my below thread:

HOWTO Boot from a .iso file without needing a working CD-ROM - REALLY USEFUL!

I think i'm going to give up. I have no idea how to install grub, and yes I've tried reading up on it but i'm just lost.

    Thanks for you help John.

Maybe i'll give it another shot when I find an easier way to install it.

Before you give up, here's an alternative to John's method:

unetbootin is a file that sits in your Windows (or other linux) partition and starts off an installation from the net instead of an iso file. You don't need to make a new partition if you've got an existing system on your machine, and once the installation gets going there's a partitioner that helps you set things up, just like the regular Ubuntu install disk.

I've just used it and it was pretty easy.

Thanks for the net install idea, but i've tried that before this method and that didn't work.

But I really wanted to try ubuntu, so i went out and bought a new laptop. I now have dual boot vista and ubuntu, and i LOVE ubuntu.

Anyways, thanks all for trying to help me. It really was an old system, i think buying a new afford me a chance to really give ubuntu a fair try, rather than try running it on a slower machine and not really 'experience' it fully.

    Thanks again.

Re: HOWTO: Install Edgy 6.10 from an .iso file

    john,

I used your tuto to install Gutsy, and tried on Hardy, but had problems.

Fixed them, thou, with these 2 simple changes on your tuto:

FIRST: change the link to the vmlinuz & initrd.gz files, from edgy to hardy. This way, you can get the needed compressed kernel files to install.

    old > http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/

    change to > http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/

SECOND: rise the set ramdisk_size for the decompressed kernel files on the new entry for Grub, as 14972 seemed not to be enough.

    old > kernel /boot/vmlinuz vga=normal ramdisk_size=14972 root=/dev/rd/0 rw --

    change to > kernel /boot/vmlinuz vga=normal ramdisk_size=149720 root=/dev/rd/0 rw --

In fact, I am not really sure how much ramdisk_size is actually needed, but 10x the original solved the problem.

Other than that, Hardy installed smoothly, just as Gutsy with yout original tuto.

    Thanks!
