Adobe Flash install information for AMD64 (December 2009 update)

I have 3.5.6 firefox install which I believe is the 64bit version

It's not; it says 'i686' (32-bit) on an x86_64 system

Thanks! I've been struggling with this for a while, and the new version of libflashplayer.so does the trick. BTW, the addons tab in Firefox now shows both Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32 and Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42 despite my making sure that r32 was gone from the relevant directories. I first tried using the disable button on r32 and flash did not work; both versions must indicate that they are enabled for flash to work.

Do I have "libflashplayer.so" installed as user "rj" (that's me)? (See below.)

Would that be my problem?

It *was* installed as "rj rj" (instead of "root rj") right after running the script, so I did a

sudo chown root /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

which made it "root rj". Does it need to be "root root" (as per the other plugins)? If so, I'm not sure how to create that. (And, are permission what they should be?)

Running Karmic on a 64-bit System76 Wild Dog Performance desktop unit (model wilp6), 3 GHz quad core intel processor Q9650, 1 GB nVidia GeForce GTS 250 video card, Firefox 3.5.6. Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you sure your Firefox is 64-bit?

Just now have read the whole thread & determined that I'm running 32-bit Firefox. Will follow link re FirefoxNewVersion at community wiki to get the 64-bit version.

Three issues here.

The link didn't open since your 32-bit Firefox from Mozilla binary build didn't know how to handle (apt) type link. Ubuntized firefox knows how to work it.

firefox-3.5 package is really the latest of firefox-3.5.x family. So, all you got to do is select Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center, and search for Firefox there. Firefox 3.5.6 is simply named "Firefox Web Browser". Once you install it, Ubuntu will automatically and seamlessly keep Firefox at the latest security update.

BUT you may need to uninstall the 32-bit version before installing 64-bit version. Since I don't know how you installed it, I can't help you do the uninstall. I also suspect that you may also need to sort through your plugins and get rid of non-functioning 32-bit ones. I saw a couple in them in the listing of /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ directory.
Run file <name> to see if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.
64-bit plugin:

I tried to reproduce it, but I am having very hard time figuring out how you have r32 and r42 installed at the same time. Could you please run command:

locate libflashplayer

If command locate is not found, install mlocate, and run the command in ~24 hours. That's how long it will take mlocate to index your hard drive.

(1) I first deleted five non-64-bit plugins from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

(The ones I deleted were all *.xpt files (instead of *.so files).

(2) I uninstalled my 32-bit Firefox and its associated files.

(3) I then installed "Firefox Web Brower" from Applications --> Ubuntu Software Center, but apparently got just the 32-bit Firefox again:

"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 Firefox/3.5.6."

I then came to a complete standstill at <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptURL>

at this point: "Clic on this link apt://mplayer , and in the "Application launch" windows, clic on the "Choose" button [& so on] . . . and validate."

because after adding the necessary strings and values in about:config, I still couldn't go anywhere upon clicking on apt://mplayer.

So I still have 32-bit Firefox and cannot yet seem to install 64-bit FF. Really strange, but maybe something obvious to a fresh eye. Thanks for any/all suggestions.
